哈特(Joseph Hart, 1712-1768)是個生活放蕩的青年，早年竭力反對神，而且引人與他同行。他也跑教堂，但目的在於挑毛病。
　　 有一次，聽約翰衛斯理(John Wesley, 1703-1791)講羅馬書第八章32節，由於他是語文教員，自恃能舞文弄墨，竟然寫了一本小冊子反駁：“宗教的不合理性”(The Unreasonableness of Religion)。他自認是：“不受約束的退後者，無恥的罪魁，鹵莽大膽的叛徒。”
　　 到了四十五歲那年，他發覺自己其實是信有神，只是像許多同路人一樣，只是為了自傲，不肯承認；他的良心受到責備，畏怯的真相全顯露出來。有一段時間，他不敢睡覺，怕的是一覺醒來，身在地獄。他周遊各教會，但總是覺得被定罪。
　　 最後，他進入倫敦的莫拉維福音堂，聽到了盼望的信息。那是有人在傳講啟示錄第三章10節，呼召人接受基督為主為救主。他回家後，跪下禱告，皈信基督。那反對基督的掃羅，成為愛主的保羅；迫害教會的筆，為主所使用。他筆的事奉，結了不少果子。
　　 三年後，哈特成為倫敦耶文街會堂(Jewin St. Chapel)的牧師，傳揚與神和好的福音。
　　 哈特出版了心琴集(Heart Harp)，其中的一首“罪人請來”(Come Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy)，兩個半世紀來，仍然為人所喜愛歌唱，因為那是過來人的心聲。
　　 只是他的事奉，不過短短的十年。1768年五月二十四日，蒙恩的罪人哈特，離開世界，去見他的主：不再恐懼審判，而是快樂回到父家，得到接納和永遠福樂。

樊得璧 Cornelius Vanderbilt

　　許多驕傲剛硬的罪人，在這歌聲和音樂的感動下，謙卑下來，承認自己的罪，接受主拯救的恩典。

　　 一百多年後，八十三歲的樊得璧(Cornelius Vanderbilt, 1794-1877)纏綿在病床上，已經到了燈枯油盡的地步。他是當時美國最富有的人，也是世界上的首富。可是他沒有預備好去見造他的主。他的家人聚集環繞在他身邊，唱“罪人貧窮軟弱可憐”這首詩。知道自己靈魂真實的情形，是得恩的機會。
　　 一個悔改罪人筆下流露的心聲，成為許多人蒙恩的階梯。
