當我見周圍密雲聚集，
日子黑暗，朋友們漸稀，
倚靠祂總不至虛空，
主歷盡人間的傷痛；
祂緩解我懼怕，祂看見我需要，
數算我的眼淚並以為寶。

如果任何事物引誘我背離
那屬天智慧的窄路，
從當追求的良善逃避，
或行我不當行的罪惡，
仍是經歷過試探權勢的主，
必保守我在危險時站得住。

如果我的愛心受到傷害，
所親近的人竟對我欺騙，
祂必然施幫助慈憐，
祂在世經歷的更慘，
曾經被撇棄，否認，背叛，
那些人每天同桌吃祂的飯。

如果苦惱心思在裏面興起，
使我的心靈絕望以至於死，
但祂曾經賜我力量
能夠忍受憂苦失望，
必溫和的撫慰，輕柔的拭乾，
那震蕩的心靈，流淚的眼。

當我在墓石前哀傷低頭，
下面是我過去的朋友，
他的聲音，笑貌，和手，
要跟我分別還不長久，
你，曾哭泣在拉撒路的墓門口，
救主，記認我的眼淚傾流。

噢，當我經過一切安全
到了最後的一場爭戰，
你依然，依然不曾改變，
在我痛苦的床邊，—你早經驗
勝過死亡直往無雲的白天，
把最晚的眼淚擦乾。

 

When Gathering Clouds Around

When gathering clouds around I view,
And days are dark, and friends are few,
On Him I lean who not in vain
Experienced every human pain;
He sees my wants, allays my fears,
And counts and treasures up my tears.

If aught should tempt my soul to stray
From heavenly wisdom's narrow way,
To fly the good I would pursue,
Or do the sin I would not do,
Still He who felt temptation's power
Shall guard me in that dangerous hour.

If wounded love my bosom swell,
Deceived by those I prized too well,
He shall His pitying aid bestow
Who felt on earth severer woe,
At once betrayed, denied, or fled,
By those who shared His daily bread.

If vexing thoughts within me rise,
And sore dismayed my spirit dies,
Still He who once vouchsafed to bear
The sickening anguish of despair
Shall sweetly soothe, shall gently dry,
The throbbing heart, the streaming eye.

When sorrowing o'er some stone I bend,
Which covers what was once a friend,
And from his voice, his hand, his smile,
Divides me for a little while,
Thou, Saviour, mark'st the tears I shed,
For Thou didst weep o'er Lazarus dead.

And O, when I have safely past
Through every conflict but the last,
Still, still unchanging, watch beside
My painful bed,— for Thou hast died;
Then point to realms of cloudless day,
And wipe the latest tear away.
