人口    18467人(1999年)。多屬密克羅尼西亞人種。官方語言為帕勞語,通用英語。全國73%居民信奉基督教,其中40.7%信羅馬天主教,24.7%信基督教新教。
   
首都   科羅爾(Koror),人口12300人(1999年)。

簡況   位於西太平洋,關島以南700英里處,屬加羅林群島,是太平洋進入東南亞的門戶之一。海岸線長1519公里。由200多個火山島和珊瑚島組成,分佈在南北長640公里的海面上,其中只有9個島上有常住居民。最大島嶼為Babeldaob島,面積352平方公里,在本地區僅次於關島。屬熱帶氣候,年均溫度27℃。年降水量3000毫米以上。
   4000
年前就有人居住。1710年被西班牙探險家發現。1885年被西班牙佔領,1898年被西班牙賣給德國。一次大戰中被日本佔領,二次大戰期間被美國攻佔。1947年,聯合國將其交美國託管,與馬紹爾群島、北馬里亞納群島和密克羅尼西亞聯邦構成太平洋島嶼託管地的4個政治實體。1969年,帕勞開始就未來政治地位同美國談判。並於19828月與美簽訂了《自由聯繫條約》。但該條約在多次公民投票中,均因未達75%的法定多數而未能獲得通過。199311月舉行第八次公決,終於順利通過了該條約。根據該條約,帕勞於1994101日結束其託管地位,成為獨立的主權國家,但與美國仍保持特殊關係。同年12月,帕勞加入聯合國。

【議會】  由參、衆兩院組成。參議院較衆議院權力大,具有對總統候選人提出建議和表決的權力。參院有14名參議員,衆院有16名衆議員,任期均為4年。兩院均設正副議長職位。本屆議會於200011月大選產生,參議長塞特·安德烈斯(Seit Andres)連任,至4月初衆議長尚未選出。

【重要人物】 小湯米·雷門格紹:總統。1956228日出生於帕勞科羅爾州。1984年當選為帕議會參議員,是帕歷史上最年輕的參議員。1992年和1996年兩次當選帕副總統。雷曾任美國聯邦地區法院(塞班)法律研究員,帕勞衛生局行政官員及規劃員、帕首屆議會新聞官、帕第二、第三屆議會參議員、議會賦稅委員會主席。雷當選為副總統後兼任行政部長,還被中村邦夫總統委任為幾個重要委員會主席。在200011月大選中當選總統。
   
經濟    經濟主要依靠外國援助和一些最基本的糧食和漁業生產。1996年後, 由於美根據《美帕自由聯繫條約》向帕提供的援款數額大幅下降,及受亞洲金融危機影響, 帕經濟增長速度下降, 1997年為5.5%, 1998年據估算出現了一定程度的負增長。

【旅遊業】  旅遊業是帕支柱產業之一。1998年遊客為64194人次,旅遊業及相關產業收入約為6548萬美元,相當於當年國內生產總值的51%。遊客主要來自日本、臺灣、美國和歐盟。至19999月共有旅館客房1049間,到2000年可達1500間。帕勞的“岩石島”(Rock Islands)是太平洋最純淨的海洋生態系統之一。
   
【交通運輸】  境內有機場、港口和衛星通訊系統。

進口商品主要是機械、汽車、燃油、工業製成品、食品等,出口主要為鮮魚和少量服裝。
 
【外國援助】  主要援助國為美國、澳大利亞和日本。根據《帕美自由聯繫條約》,1997年帕接受美國援款3153萬美元。
 
人民生活   當地工人年均收入為3380多美元。有1所醫院和13所診療所。現有醫生20余名。1998年帕人口平均年齡為28.3歲,平均壽命 67.5歲。1997年有11000台收音機和12000台電視機。
  軍事  無軍隊,有60名警察(1992年)。根據《帕美自由聯繫條約》,國防由美國負責50年。
 
文化教育     【教育】  1998年共有小學25所,在校學生2398人。中學6所,在校學生1162人。另有900名學生就讀于私立學校。有大專一所(帕勞社區大學,Palau Community College),在校學生332人。

  【同美國的關係】  《帕美自由聯繫條約》於1994101日生效, 有效期15年。根據該條約,帕有內政、外交自主權,美國負責其國防及戰略安全事務,並對帕航道具有獨家使用權。為此,美以租金形式在條約生效的15年內向帕提供6.27億美元的援助。

After three decades as part of the UN Trust Territory of the Pacific under US administration, this westernmost cluster of the Caroline Islands opted for independent status in 1978 rather than join the Federated States of Micronesia. A Compact of Free Association with the US was approved in 1986, but not ratified until 1993. It entered into force the following year when the islands gained their independence.
